A small teddy bear with a remarkable family history has been named Object of the Year by the Hertfordshire Association of Museums.
The award was presented on Wednesday 4th March, recognising the historical and emotional significance of the bear, known simply as “Teddy”, which is now on display at Knebworth House.
Teddy belonged to Cameron Cobbold (1904–1987), the grandfather of Knebworth House’s current custodian, Henry Lytton Cobbold. As a child, Cameron’s favourite companion was the small bear. He later went on to have a distinguished career, serving as Governor of the Bank of England and subsequently as Lord Chamberlain to Queen Elizabeth II, yet despite his prominent public roles, Teddy stayed by his side.
After Cameron’s death in 1987, Teddy was packed away with his belongings. Wearing a small dressing gown and scarf, the bear remained hidden for decades.
In 2025, archivists working in the attic at Knebworth House made a remarkable discovery. Inside a box containing some of Cameron Cobbold’s most personal possessions, they found the worn but friendly-looking teddy bear, whose eyes were still full of character.
Following examination by conservation experts, Teddy was placed on display at Knebworth House. He now sits on his favourite chair in the Hampden Room, where thousands of visitors have already enjoyed seeing him and hearing the story behind the small bear with a big history.
The Hertfordshire Association of Museums’ Object of the Year award celebrates artefacts that tell compelling stories about the county’s heritage. Teddy’s journey from childhood toy to a witness of an extraordinary life captured the public’s imagination.
Henry Lytton Cobbold, custodian of Knebworth House, said, “Teddy may be a small bear, but he carries a remarkable story. He was my grandfather Cameron Cobbold’s childhood companion and remained with him throughout his life. We are delighted that this very personal object, which represents both family history and wider national history, has been recognised by the Hertfordshire Association of Museums.”
