If you saw Knebworth House in Episode 4 of the Netflix show \u201cThe Gentleman\u201d, what were you doing watching such nonsense?\u00a0 And no, the mad old boy running around naked at the beginning was not a cameo from me.\u00a0 We, of course, love Knebworth House being used in movies and TV shows, however silly they might be, because movies provide a repair fund to tackle those restoration projects which, even if they are not the urgent ones, make such a big difference to visitors\u2019 experience of the House.<\/p>\n

A good example is this wallpaper, which was recently restored thanks to funds from film work.\u00a0 Film work can be problematic for wallpaper, because it doesn\u2019t like the mist that Directors of Photography like to use to add atmosphere to a room.\u00a0 So it has been a particular pleasure to see this example recently restored with film funds.\u00a0 Rather than reprinting the wallpaper, the work is done by repairing the paper and stenciling back the pattern.\u00a0 This piece is from the 1840s and displays the Lytton family motto, \u2018Hoc Virtutis Opus\u2019.<\/p>\n

I have always struggled to make sense of this motto \u2013 it translates along the lines of \u2018This is Virtue\u2019s Work\u2019, and I have never really understood what that means. \u00a0Not like the Cobbold motto, \u2018Rebus Angustis Fortis\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Courage Through Adversity\u2019 \u2013 which I have always found a very helpful mantra.\u00a0 But recently we found the origin of \u2018Hoc Virtutis Opus\u2019, and now, suddenly, it makes sense.\u00a0 It is about good deeds extending beyond one\u2019s lifetime.\u00a0 It is from Virgil\u2019s \u201cThe Aeneid\u201d and the full quote translates as, “To each his day is given; man’s brief and irretrievable time runs by; but to prolong life’s fame with great deeds, this is virtue’s work.\u201d<\/p>\n
