{"id":847,"date":"2022-01-31T23:42:52","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T23:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/?p=847"},"modified":"2022-01-17T13:43:47","modified_gmt":"2022-01-17T13:43:47","slug":"february-2022-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/?p=847","title":{"rendered":"February 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is the time of year \u2013 and the years of our time \u2013 that many of us are reaching into the medicine cabinet for the Beecham\u2019s Powders.\u00a0 The travelling salesman Thomas Beecham opened his first factory \u2018for the rapid production of medicines\u2019 in 1849 in St Helens, Lancashire.\u00a0 His son Sir Joseph Beecham expanded the company to such success that he entered into an agreement with the Duke of Bedford to purchase the Covent Garden estate for \u00a32,000,000.\u00a0 Sir Joseph died with more than half of this amount outstanding in mortgage, and his two sons, Sir Thomas, the renowned conductor, and Henry were left to sell off property to find the remainder of the money.<\/p>\n<p>During this time \u2013 the early 1920s \u2013 Henry Beecham, \u2018wholesale druggist\u2019, in his early 30s, rented Knebworth House with his wife Ethel, five-year-old daughter Helen, four-year-old son Joseph, and newborn Henry.\u00a0 Their household comprised Alice, a \u2018trained nurse\u2019; Ethel, a \u2018children\u2019s nurse\u2019; Louise, a \u2018housekeeper&#8217;; Margaret, a \u2018personal maid\u2019; and Margaret\u2019s husband George, a \u2018motor mechanic\u2019.\u00a0 How do I know this?\u00a0 Because last month the 1921 Census was published.<\/p>\n<p>The Beechams seceded control of the family company soon afterwards, but it continued to thrive, subsuming products such as Lucozade, Macleans toothpaste and Eno antacid, until being subsumed itself in 1989 as SmithKline Beecham, and in 2000 as GlaxoSmithKline.\u00a0 And there the Beechams connection to Knebworth House continues on into the future, as it is Glaxo\u2019s Pharmaceutical Research &amp; Development chimney stacks that, 100 years on, Knebworth House\u2019s windows now look out at across Knebworth Park.\u00a0 Henry Beecham could not have envisaged that when, having filled in his Census form, he looked out of these windows on that Sunday, April 24<sup>th<\/sup>, in 1921.<\/p>\n<p>Henry Lytton Cobbold<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/henrycobboldkh?lang=en-GB\">@HenryCobboldKH<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-851 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beechams-Powders-296x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beechams-Powders-296x300.png 296w, https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beechams-Powders-768x778.png 768w, https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beechams-Powders.png 800w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 296px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 296\/300;\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is the time of year \u2013 and the years of our time \u2013 that many of us are reaching into the medicine cabinet for the Beecham\u2019s Powders.\u00a0 The travelling salesman Thomas Beecham opened his first factory \u2018for the rapid &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/?p=847\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-847","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-22"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 -
