Is somebody trying to tell me something, naming a retirement suite after me?!\u00a0 Martha and I were shocked to discover that McCarthy & Stone, builders of Lowe House in the High Street, have given Lytton family names to most of their retirement apartments, including \u2018The Henry\u2019, a two-bed, and \u2018The Martha\u2019, a one-bed.\u00a0 Of course McCarthy & Stone may have a different Henry and Martha in mind – however, they are also advertising \u2018The Robert\u2019 and \u2018The Edith\u2019 (my great-great-grandparents), \u2018The Constance\u2019 and \u2018The Edwin\u2019 (my great-great-aunt, and uncle Edwin Lutyens), \u2018The Edward\u2019 and \u2018The Alexander\u2019 (my two great-uncles, known as Antony and John), \u2018The Tate\u2019, \u2018The Todd\u2019 and \u2018The Kipling\u2019 (Knebworth House\u2019s 19th<\/sup> Century housekeeper, valet and gardener)\u2026 and, if that wasn\u2019t association enough, \u2018The Lytton\u2019.\u00a0 At least with McCarthy & Stone\u2019s 2015 retirement development \u2018Constance Place\u2019 we were asked first if we approved, by North Herts District Council.<\/p>\n

As with Constance Place, in most instances I am happy for my ancestors\u2019 names to be used in connection with Knebworth buildings \u2013 and in the case of the Lowe House apartments it is nice to see other members of Knebworth House household remembered \u2013 but it is odd not to be asked, and it is especially odd to have my own name used when I spent most of the first decade of this century trying to stop Lowe\u2019s Yard being developed in this way.\u00a0 I worked hard, with the support of Peter Lowe, to put forward an alternative plan for the High Street, opening it up with a Village Green (images remain online at www.knebworthoptionsreport.org<\/a>, the last page of \u2018Appendices 1 & 2\u2019).<\/p>\n

So I hope you don\u2019t think I had anything to do with \u2018The Henry\u2019.\u00a0 In the same way I hope you don\u2019t think my family had anything to do with \u2018Lytton Heights\u2019, a development which has been signposted across the village for some time.\u00a0 In that instance the developer, Cala Homes, said they didn\u2019t know there was a Lytton family living here, they\u2019d named it after the pub!<\/p>\n
