\u201cKnebworth was probably a Saxon settlement.\u00a0 The Domesday spelling in 1085 is \u2018Chenepeworde\u2019, meaning \u2018village on the hill\u2019.\u00a0 Another more romantic interpretation is \u2018Cnebba\u2019s Camp\u2019 suggesting the Knebworth was formerly home of Cnebba, the 5th<\/sup> Century Saxon prince.\u201d\u00a0 So opens the Knebworth House guide book, and this has long been the official story on the origins of our village.<\/p>\n

The Press Release recently sent out for \u2018Knebworth Watch\u2019, the Virtual Reality App developed as part of our Watchman\u2019s Tower project (available to download for free from the Apple Store and the Play Store), offers the user \u201ca journey through history showing what Knebworth House and the Park may have looked like in Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Tudor and Victorian times, up to the modern day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Probably\u2019?\u00a0 \u2018Maybe\u2019?\u00a0 This hill of Knebworth, at 450 feet above sea level, is the highest point on the London to Edinburgh road between London and York.\u00a0 Of course there was a Saxon settlement here.\u00a0 Why would you not have a fortified camp on this most strategic spot?\u00a0 This was the front line in the battle against the marauding Danes, repelled by the brave Saxons only to make it as far as the village of Dane End on the other side of the valley.<\/p>\n

Yes, I know Wikipedia says Dane End simply means \u2018valley ends\u2019.\u00a0 But where\u2019s the story in that?\u00a0 What does Wikipedia know?\u00a0 We descendants of Prince Cnebba, with our roots in this ancient fortified Saxon hill of Knebworth, know better.\u00a0 We know never to let the truth get in the way of a good story!<\/p>\n
