The two big summer films of 1989 were Tim Burton\u2019s \u2018Batman\u2019 and Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u2018Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade\u2019 \u2013 I remember this because both films contained the same joke around Edward Bulwer Lytton\u2019s line \u201cthe pen is mightier than the sword\u201d.\u00a0 The line was quoted in both films as a pen was used as a weapon.\u00a0 We were living in Los Angeles and had the thrill of seeing \u2018Batman\u2019 on a giant screen in the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard, particularly special because Batman\u2019s house, Wayne Manor, was, of course, our house, Knebworth House.\u00a0 The only place I can think of more fun to see \u2018Batman\u2019 would be in front of Knebworth House itself \u2013 and, guess what, to celebrate the film\u2019s 30th<\/sup> anniversary, we can all do that!\u00a0 Tim Burton\u2019s \u2018Batman\u2019 is being screened at 9.30pm on Thursday 4th<\/sup> July, as one of our Luna Cinema open-air presentations.<\/p>\n

The man who has spent more time sitting in front of Knebworth House than anybody in its history very sadly died in June.\u00a0 Julian Smith (1943-2019) manned our St Mary\u2019s Gate entrance for most of his retirement years.\u00a0 One of few possible challengers is his maternal grandfather, William Jennings, who having been butler in the house, spent time as the house\u2019s night watchman in the (now restored) Watchman\u2019s Tower.\u00a0 Both of Julian\u2019s parents grew up on the Knebworth Estate, the Jennings in Tower Lodge and the Smiths, for a time, in what is now our Estate Offices.\u00a0 Julian enjoyed recalling that what is now Martha\u2019s office was once his grandparents\u2019 bedroom.<\/p>\n

Every time I pass through St Mary\u2019s Gate I think of Julian sitting there in his boater on a summer\u2019s afternoon.\u00a0 I am sure I will always see him sitting there.\u00a0 Others, I\u2019m sure, will see him sitting in the corner of his evening haunt, the Lytton Arms \u2013 or sitting at a piano, beaming, and playing beautifully, at one of countless Knebworth parties.\u00a0 He will be hugely missed by everyone in Old Knebworth.<\/p>\n
