Representatives from authors\u2019 and musicians\u2019 homes and museums from around the United Kingdom visited Knebworth House in November for the 15th<\/sup> annual LitHouses Conference.\u00a0 Sir Walter Scott and James Boswell were represented from Scotland, Dylan Thomas from Wales, John Ruskin from the Lake District, the Bront\u00ebs from Yorkshire\u2026 all the way to Benjamin Britten from the far east coast of East Anglia, Jane Austen from Hampshire and Thomas Hardy from Dorset.\u00a0 A truly nationwide gathering.<\/p>\n

The topic was literary homes as an education resource and we had speakers from the Universities of Hertfordshire and Cambridge.\u00a0 A portrait of Edward Bulwer Lytton watched over proceedings and \u2013 as a great patron of writers and writer\u2019s causes who, with his friend Charles Dickens (also represented), created The Guild of Literature and Art (now part of the Artists\u2019 Benevolent Fund) \u2013 I know my great-great-great-grandfather would have approved, and been delighted that his home was hosting such an august group representing the country\u2019s greatest authors and composers. \u00a0I suspect he was present.<\/p>\n

As his good friend wrote \u2013 exactly 175 years ago \u2013 \u201cA Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us every one!\u201d<\/p>\n
