On Thursday 28th<\/sup> June we are visited by the Lord Chamberlain\u2019s Men, a theatre group modelled on and named after Shakespeare\u2019s original troupe of travelling players.\u00a0 They will be performing \u2018The Tempest\u2019 on the garden lawn in front of Knebworth House, and \u2013 in this particularly lovely and special setting \u2013 we are assured \u201csuch stuff as dreams are made on\u201d!<\/p>\n

In 1963, my grandfather Cameron Cobbold became Lord Chamberlain and \u2013 as had been the case since Tudor times \u2013 it became his job to censor plays. \u00a0The Lord Chamberlain\u2019s \u2018blue pencil\u2019 was used to strike out words felt to be offensive.\u00a0 The \u2018blue pencil\u2019 was the object of much of the anger of the emerging generation of \u2018angry young playwrights\u2019 of the 1950s and 1960s.\u00a0 There was even a Peter Cook and Dudley Moore satirical sketch called \u2018Lord Cobbold\u2019, in which the Lord Chamberlain asks why he would want to see all that sex and violence at the theatre, when he can get all that at home.\u00a0 My grandfather, not surprisingly, was uncomfortable with this aspect of his role.\u00a0 Censorship in this form had, at last, become untenable.\u00a0 And so, I am proud to say, under his tenure it was brought to a stop as part of the 1968 Theatres Act.<\/p>\n

Cameron Cobbold – Lord Chamberlain 1963-1971<\/em><\/p>\n

So now the Lord Chamberlain\u2019s Men can say what they will in Lord Cobbold\u2019s garden\u2026\u00a0 But \u201cbe not afeard; the isle is full of noises, sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not\u201d.\u00a0 \u2018The Tempest\u2019 is not an angry young play, it is one of the English language\u2019s most beautifully poetic – and there are few more splendid places to see it performed than in the gardens of Knebworth House on a June evening!<\/p>\n
