{"id":510,"date":"2015-11-30T23:16:37","date_gmt":"2015-11-30T23:16:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/?p=510"},"modified":"2015-11-18T20:23:56","modified_gmt":"2015-11-18T20:23:56","slug":"december-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/?p=510","title":{"rendered":"December 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As many will be heading to Christmas Parties at Knebworth Barns this month, I thought it would be an appropriate month to follow the recent advice of a kind reader and relate the history of the two original Barns, for those too young to remember or who have moved to Knebworth since the early 1970s.\u00a0 \u201cMove tithe barns to make a restaurant\u201d was the second on a long list of tasks my mother and father scribbled out in 1970 to be completed before the opening of Knebworth Park the following spring, after \u201cBuild the new drive off the motorway\u201d and \u201cBuild a kitchen and loo block\u201d.\u00a0 Their priority was a catering facility that looked in keeping with the park, and two 400-year-old barns that were part of Manor Farm and Lodge Farm were chosen to be given a new life.<\/p>\n<p>Lodge Barn was dismantled and rebuilt on the new site.\u00a0 Manor Barn, however, was jacked up on sixteen huge wheels and pulled by a steam traction engine two-thirds of a mile across the park.\u00a0 It was the largest building every to be moved intact in England.\u00a0 It was meant to take five days &#8211; it took five weeks.\u00a0 My mother recalls, \u201cCharlie, the driver of the traction engine pulling the barn, regularly got bored and disappeared to \u2018his office\u2019 \u2013 his name for The Lytton Arms.\u00a0 When all was ready he had to be extracted from the pub and guided back to the engine.\u00a0 On the first pull, the engine went backwards instead of the barn going forwards.\u00a0 But it got there in the end, and not a single tile fell off the roof!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1973 you could get a four-course lunch or dinner there, \u201cincluding coffee\u201d, for \u00a32.50 \u2013 it is a little more today, but still a unique and historic environment, and scene of many happy weddings, parties and community events.\u00a0 Thanks Charlie!\u00a0 It was worth the puff!<\/p>\n<p>Henry Lytton Cobbold<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.knebworthhouse.com\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">www.knebworthhouse.com<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Barn-Moving-1971.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-511 alignright lazyload\" data-src=\"http:\/\/www.knebworthhouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Barn-Moving-1971-300x128.jpg\" alt=\"Knebworth Barns -
