This month we lost another gargoyle off the roof of Knebworth House \u2013 smashed to the gravel below, a victim of the ravages of time and the weather.\u00a0 It is a stark reminder that 45% of the house remains in perilous condition.\u00a0 English Heritage has generously offered a grant to tackle the particularly bad upper level of the western central elevation \u2013 but in order to accept it, The Knebworth House Education and Preservation Trust needs to find matching funds which it does not have (without crippling its annual operating budget).\u00a0 We have offered to donate to the charity proceeds from the development of the only land on Knebworth Estate that is not in Greenbelt \u2013 two small paddocks in Stevenage Borough \u2013 but it remains to be seen whether that is an acceptable option or whether it can be achieved before the offer of the grant is lost.\u00a0 Either way, repairing this month\u2019s fallen masonry is not an option \u2013 it is part of the eastern central elevation.<\/p>\n

Happier news is the response to The Knebworth House Education and Preservation Trust\u2019s schools\u2019 story writing competition.\u00a0 The challenge to 7 to 11 year olds was to write a short story beginning with Edward Bulwer Lytton\u2019s classic line, \u201cIt was a dark and stormy night,,,\u201d\u00a0 The 1st<\/sup> Prize entry wins a day in Knebworth Park for the author\u2019s whole class.\u00a0 The competition has had a phenomenal response from all over Hertfordshire \u2013 the standard of the entries has been very high and it has been a tough task for the judges to choose a shortlist of 12, let alone a winner.\u00a0 Maybe this can become an annual \u201cBulwer Lytton Competition\u201d to challenge the scurrilous one in California that mocks bad opening lines \u2013 clearly \u201cIt was a dark and stormy night\u2026\u201d has moved beyond clich\u00e9, to classic, to inspiration!<\/p>\n
